About Michael Wenseslaus Malugala

I’m a Tanzanian visual artist whose artistic journey started at the tender age of ten as I was driven by a profound need to express my emotions through creative means. Growing up in Singida in Tanzania, I found solace and inspiration in the vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes that surrounded me. This early passion for art led me to pursue formal training, culminating in a Bachelor of Arts and Design from the University of Dar es Salaam.

Art is a living legacy, passed down through generations, carrying stories of our history, beliefs and struggle. It is a means to honour our past, celebrate the present and shape a brighter future. Inspired by the Maasai beadwork, the Swahili coast hues, and my ancestor’s rock art, my acrylic paintings aim to authentically represent Tanzanian culture and landscapes. I paint landscapes like the Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro, the serene beaches of Zanzibar etc., as well as the vibrant markets of Dar es Salaam and the incredible diversity of Tanzanian wildlife, from majestic lions and elephants to graceful giraffes, colourful birds and more. Additionally, I explore abstract expressions, translating the essence of Tanzanian landscapes into abstract forms using colour and texture that evoke the feeling of the savanna, the ocean, or the mountains- I also use cultural patterns drawing inspiration from traditional textiles, beadwork, and carvings.

I believe that art has the power to transcend borders and foster understanding between cultures. I aspire to raise awareness about social and environmental issues, creating works that address the challenges our communities are facing, such as poverty, environmental degradation, and inequality, and inspire action towards a more just and sustainable future. While evolving as an artist, I plan to remain true to my roots, continuously learning and experimenting.
