About Phillips Nzekwe
Phillips Nzekwe: Artist, Environmentalist, and Innovator
Born in Jos, Nigeria in 1981, Phillips Nzekwe is one of Nigeria's most distinguished experimental sculptors. He holds a bachelor's degree in Fine Art from Delta State University and a master's degree in Sculpture from the University of Benin.
Nzekwe's art explores rich material culture from his environment, addressing issues such as migration, child rights, and globalization's impact on African identities. His work often incorporates salvaged materials.
A significant innovation in Nzekwe's practice is his development of "Eco-friendly wood," a sustainable material made from silica, organic compounds, and wood dust — a by-product of the lumber industry. This invention represents his contribution to sustainability and campaign against deforestation.
Nzekwe's artistic techniques draw inspiration from African traditional arts, architecture, tropical colors, and contemporary 3D animated images. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in Nigeria since he started working as an artist.
A full-time studio artist for over two decades, Nzekwe received the Triangle Trust Grant (2012/2013) and has participated in numerous international workshops. His works are held in collections globally, cementing his status as a significant figure in contemporary Nigerian art.
