About Omonu Salisu

The journey of an artist is seldom smooth, and mine has been no exception. Faced with countless challenges—moments of self doubt, creative blocks, struggling with my artistic passion and the societal expectations, the weight of creating meaningful work that resonates deeply has often been daunting, but it has also been my greatest teacher.

I’m Omonu Salisu, a visual artist born in 1991, in Idah, Kogi State. From a young age, I was captivated by the world of art, often drawing distorted shapes that hinted at my unique perspective and creative potential. This early passion blossomed into a dedicated practice of acrylic painting rooted in Expressionism, where I found my true voice.

For me, art is synonymous with freedom, expression, and purpose. It is my silent language, translating the world around and within me into vibrant colors, dynamic lines, and evocative forms. My work is an abstract representation of life, deeply rooted in the rich tapestry of African culture and historical events, human figures, expressions and connexion, and the rich symbolism of colors as cultural emblems. The wisdom of proverbs, the stories of our ancestors, and the resilience embedded in everyday life have become the foundation of my creative voice. I also like to address socio-economic and political issues, inviting viewers to engage in thoughtful dialogue and reflection.

The impact I seek to create is rooted in my core values of cultural preservation, empathy, and freedom of expression. Through my art, I aim to celebrate African heritage, inspire pride in identity, and spark conversations about socio economic and political issues. I want my work to educate, foster unity, and empower individuals to confront challenges with hope and resilience. By bridging divides and highlighting the shared human experience, I aspire to create a world where art becomes a catalyst for dialogue and transformation. Whether through mentoring young artists, advocating for African art on global platforms, or inspiring self discovery, my goal is to use art as a tool to shape a more understanding, connected, and inspired society.

In terms of style, I am intrigued by the possibilities of integrating mixed media and digital art into my practice, merging traditional techniques with contemporary forms of expression. I am also interested in experimenting with installation art and sculptures, creating immersive experiences that allow viewers to engage with my work on a multi-dimensional level. This evolution reflects my desire to continuously push boundaries, challenge perceptions, and connect with a broader audience through diverse artistic language.
